Eve Polastri is one of the main protagonists in the BBC series Killing Eve. She is an MI5 security operative who soon becomes involved in a cat-and-mouse game with a hired assassin Villanelle.

The two women becoming mutually obsessed, sharing what has been called a "crackling chemistry... between bitter enemies and would-be lovers".[1] Agent Polastri tracks the "utterly unforgivable" assassin Villanelle across Europe, not as hero and villain but as "two broken women whose flaws bind them together in a twisted pas de deux".[2]

Background Edit

Eve was raised in America by her mother and father from birth. She hoped from a young age to work for MI6 in the tracking and arresting of assassins all over the world, and soon developed a somewhat morbid interest in the criminal mind. It was this dark interest that got her to get a degree in criminal psychology, and she ended up working as an MI5 security officer. She always dreamed that she’d be working as a spy in a secret assassin-hunting department for MI5, but really she is just a desk jockey tasked with assigning protection to foreign people of interest during their trips to London.

Significance in series Edit

"Nice Face" Edit

Following Bill's birthday party, a hungover Eve arrives late to a meeting with Carolyn, to discuss the suspicious death and subsequent witness protection programme of a Russian politician and his younger girlfriend. Eve bets Bill during the meeting that his killer was a woman, as the ignorant political figure would not see her as a threat.

Eve visits the politician's girlfriend, incarcerated as a witness, and secretly records the interrogation on her phone. When she comes home from the meeting, she has her husband, Niko, and one of his students, Dom, translate the drunken young woman's unsupervised comments. She receives a description of a woman seen near the crime scene, a woman with "small breasts".

The next day, Frank informs the department of a new lead - CCTV footage of a known male criminal slipping away from the murder scene, but refuses to speak of it with anyone but Carolyn.

That evening, Carolyn visits Eve at her home and the two women leave for a secluded discussion at a quiet convenience store near the house. After a brief conversation about their double-lives as security agents, Carolyn invites Eve for lunch the next day before exiting the store.

The next day at Carolyn's lunch, Eve explains how she met and fell in love with Niko, and Carolyn informs Eve of where the politician's girlfriend has been hospitalised due to passing out under questioning.

Eve gets Dom to act as a relative of the woman in hospital and the two sneak in to try to question the woman in secret. While the nurses prepare for late-night visitations, Eve leaves to the toilets. As she does her hair in the bathroom mirrors, a young nurse exits the cubicle and encourages Eve not to tie it up before leaving to attend her patients. When Eve leaves the bathroom, she finds the bodies of nurses and police officers littering the corridor, and the politician's girlfriend gasping in pain. Eve rushes to her to find that her throat has been slashed. She eventually chokes on the flow of blood and suffers a slow and brutal death in Eve's arms.

While under questioning, Eve admits her lies to Frank, telling him what she did to try to catch the killer. Frank is horrified and both Eve and Bill are investigated and fired with immediate effect. Carolyn, however, is impressed by the lengths Eve went to for an investigation and hires her as part of a secret MI6 organisation to track the assassin, led by her and an amateur "tech guy", the awkward and antisocial Kenny. Carolyn offers Eve the chance to bring two fellow agents into the organisation and Eve chooses Bill in order to keep him paid enough to support his family. She also selects a clever young MI5 security assistant, Elena, to keep them posted on any leads within the department.

"I'll Deal with Him Later" Edit

When Villanelle commits the unauthorised killing of a Frenchwoman perfumer, Eve, Carolyn, Bill, Kenny and Elena begin to track her across France. They gather no leads for some time until Elena invites Frank out for a drink to get information. However, Frank misreads the signals and Eve and Bill awkwardly reveal their plan. Frank, meanwhile, gets drunk and accidentally lets slip that he faked the CCTV to get Eve off of his back. Eve is far from shocked to discover she was right about the killer being a woman, and continues her inquiries into her identity.

"Don't I Know You?" Edit

As Eve pursues evidence on female-assassin cold cases, a Chinese political figure is poisoned with a lethal dose of carbon monoxide at a fetish hospital. It is revealed that the assassin gave her name at the front desk - a fake ID under the name Eve Polastri. In order to look into the motives of the killer's clients, Bill and Eve fly to Berlin with the British authorities for investigation purposes. When she asks to see the autopsy, Eve is told that the Chinese government in Berlin had forged a second autopsy that claimed the deceased had a heart attack induced by natural causes.

Eve attends an expensive dinner with another Chinese politician, in the hopes she can manipulate him into admitting the truth about Villanelle killing his colleague. A frustrated Eve tries to leave the table, but her date pulls her back and blurts out that MI5 may have a "little creature".

Listening to a series of voicemails from Bill, Eve hurries to a shifty and derelict nightclub in pursuit of Villanelle. She arrives a moment too late and sees Villanelle leaving through a back door. Eve realises Villanelle has stabbed Bill repeatedly in the chest and he bleeds to death before Eve can get close. Traumatised, Eve returns to the UK for the funeral.

"Sorry Baby" Edit

Back home to mourn her long-time companion, Eve shares a heart-to-heart with Elena and vows to get her revenge on the sadistic Villanelle.

While in search of Frank, who vanished after being revealed as the informant to The Twelve, Eve receives a call from Frank, who was involved in an explosive car chase with Villanelle, Nadia, and Diego who had all been sent to keep him quiet. Villanelle tricks Nadia into shooting Diego to death and then runs over Nadia with their getaway vehicle before setting out on foot after Frank.

Eve and Elena watch the chase as Frank races to their car. They force Frank into the car as Villanelle approaches on foot with a gun. Eve keeps Elena and Frank hidden then exits the car and confronts Frank's would-be killer. Villanelle fires a bullet into a nearby tree, disorienting Eve as she makes an escape.

"I Have a Thing for Bathrooms" Edit

Eve and Elena get Frank something to eat at a local café, then discreetly question him about the Twelve. Frank at last admits he knew one of the many girls the Twelve rescued from a juvenile prison and trained as killers by name: "Oksana".

Eve traces "Oksana" back to a women's prison in Moscow, and realises she was the young nurse who was in the bathroom at the hospital, and likely the assassin from Berlin. Eve discovers with shock and excitement that she has found Villanelle and has Frank moved to a guarded safe house for questioning.

The next night, Eve puts on the designer dress, expensive shoes, and a posh perfume named "Villanelle", which was first used to name the assassin. When she goes downstairs, Villanelle bursts in through the back door and chases Eve upstairs. Eve locks herself in the bathroom, and attempts to escape through a window. Villanelle kicks the door through and almost drowns Eve under a cold tap in the bath to get her attention before inviting herself for dinner.

After a brief conversation about MI6's progressive search, Eve tries to stab Oksana (Villanelle), but the girl instead presses the blade to Eve's throat. Eve is saved when Niko and Dom arrive home and Villanelle escapes.

Personality Edit

Eve was born in Britain but grew up in Connecticut. She was fiercely ambitious growing up, but mainly to impress her father, who she adored. Always fascinated by women in crime, she excelled in her degree in criminal psychology. When her father died her momentum slightly slowed; she wasn't sure who she was trying to impress anymore. Her father’s memorial brought her back to the UK where she met Niko and never really left. Eve started at MI5 and spends her work assessing risk, yet has spent a life absent from any kind of it.

Eve is slightly disappointed in her world as it is now. She’s a little rough around the edges. She has a short temper and can be occasionally gross. Like the rest of us, when shit’s not exciting, Eve just gets a bit lazy.

Struggling to find meaning in her work, Eve’s ennui is beginning to get the better of her. She doesn’t have a drug dependence problem or an unhappy domestic situation. Her husband Niko really is great. He loves Eve. So why can’t she shake a creeping sense of dissatisfaction?

Underneath her air of “a woman content with her lot in life” is a woman looking for trouble. To combat her boredom, Eve has secretly been tracking a new female assassin. Eve wants it all, the action, the blood, the rule-breaking and the femme-fatales. But she’s beginning to realize her secret passion for the gloriously awful may be nothing but a fantasy. Until one day, her fantasy crosses her path. [3]

Physical appearance Edit

Eve is a woman of Asian descent, with curly black hair, brown eyes, copper skin and a slim build. She is said to look something like Anna, as they are both "Villanelle's type".
